Background and Aim: Spiritual health, as a fundamental dimension of human well-being, requires precise formulation within Islamic traditions through the examination of authentic religious and mystical texts. Currently, there is a lack of a process-oriented model that coherently integrates the ontological, pathological, and teleological domains of this concept. Accordingly, the present study aimed to explore and reconstruct the process model of spiritual health in Imam Khomeini’s thought based on his book Tafsir Surah Al-Hamd.
Methods: This study employed a qualitative design using the "thematic network analysis" framework based on the Attride-Stirling model. The primary data source and research population comprised the complete text of the book Tafsir Surah Al-Hamd. Given that the entirety of this work consists of five televised exegesis sessions, all five sessions were comprehensively analyzed. Through a systematic process of continuous review and coding, 199 basic codes were extracted. After refinement and conceptual abstraction, these codes were categorized into 12 organizing themes and 4 global themes.
Results: The findings revealed that spiritual health in Imam Khomeini’s exegetical framework is not a static state but possesses a dynamic, continuous, and process-oriented structure. This model begins with "ontological foundations" based on the monotheistic fitrah and divine lordship. In the domain of "pathology", it encounters obstacles such as egotism (ananiyyah), the commanding self (nafs al-ammarah), worldliness, and epistemic veils. At the level of "therapeutic strategies", it is restored through migration from the self, standing for God (qiyam lillah), continuous self-discipline, and presence of heart in worship. Ultimately, it culminates in elevated "spiritual ends" such as sincerity, complete submission, inner tranquility, divine satisfaction, and annihilation in God (fana fi-Allah).
Conclusion: Consequently, spiritual health in this text is understood as the evolutionary and existential movement of the human being from the monotheistic fitrah toward nearness to God. These findings can serve as a native theoretical foundation for designing assessment tools and developing educational and clinical interventions in the field of spiritual health. |
