The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the spiritual distress scale among students.

The statistical population included of all undergraduate and graduate students of Islamic Azad University, Neyshabur branch in 2023-2024. The sample consisted of 518 students selected through convenience sampling from the faculties of humanities, medical/basic sciences, and engineering. Participants responded to the spiritual distress scale, the spiritual coping questionnaire, and the spiritual well-being questionnaire. Data were analyzed using SPSS and LISREL software.
Results: The reliability of the spiritual distress scale, measured by internal consistency method (Cronbach's alpha), was 0.93 for the total score, and 0.90, 0.77, 0.70, and 0.86 for the subscales of relationship with self, relationship with others, relationship with God, and facing death, respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the four-factor structure and demonstrated good construct validity (CFI=0.95, NFI=0.95, NNFI=0.95, IFI=0.95, RMSEA=0.078). The scale also showed good convergent and divergent validity with the Spiritual Well-Being and Spiritual Coping questionnaires.
Conclusion: The Spiritual distress scale has suitable reliability and validity for use in student populations. Researchers and therapists can use this scale alongside other assessment methods to diagnose, plan, and implement effective educational and therapeutic interventions to reduce spiritual distress and increase spiritual well-being among students.
