Background and Aim: Considering the spread of spiritual crises in the present era and the lack of indigenous frameworks based on authentic Islamic texts, this study aimed to explain the foundations and extract the components of “spiritual health” from the perspective of Nahj al-Balagha.
Methods: The present study was conducted with a qualitative approach and using the conventional content analysis method. The data were collected by systematically searching for 25 keywords related to the field of health in all sections of Nahj al-Balagha and were conceptually analyzed using valid explanations. Finally, the extracted themes were categorized in an integrated framework.
Results: The findings showed that spiritual health in Nahj al-Balagha is a dynamic and balanced state that is realized in the form of a four-dimensional model. These dimensions are: 1) Relationship with God (central core) through gratitude, piety, adherence to the Quran and worship; 2) Relationship with oneself (internal prerequisite) based on self-awareness, self-management and dignity of the essence; 3) Relationship with others (social dimension) based on justice, honesty and charity; and 4) Relationship with nature (cognitive context) centered on accepting the transience of the world and giving meaning to suffering. These dimensions, in an inseparable interaction, shape the health of the individual’s entire spiritual system.
Conclusion: The model of spiritual health in the intellectual system of Nahjul-Balagha indicates a dynamic and balanced situation in presenting a systematic and rich framework for the concept of spiritual health: Communication with God is the pillar of this system that gives direction and meaning to all of life. Communication with oneself is the foundation and central pillar that guarantees inner strength. Communication with others is the umbrella of this tent that provides social security and peace. Communication with nature is the bed on which this tent is erected, and its recognition protects us from slipping against the deception of the world. By presenting a native and religious model, this research can provide a suitable theoretical basis for designing spiritual interventions in the fields of counseling and spiritual care education in Islamic societies. |
