Background and Aim: Prostate cancer is not merely a physical illness for many soldiers; rather, it is an experience that challenges their sense of meaning, identity, and personal roles. Given that military life is closely associated with strength, discipline, and self-sacrifice, confronting this disease may necessitate a re-evaluation of one's sense of meaning, interpersonal relationships, and self-care practices. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a self-care protocol based on psychosocial and spiritual health in improving the psychosocial and spiritual health of soldiers with prostate cancer.
Methods: The research method was a quasi-experimental with a two-group-four-stage design (pre-test, post-test, one-month follow-up, and two-month follow-up). The statistical population was the soldiers of a military unit with prostate cancer in Isfahan in 2025. From the aforementioned population, 40 people were purposefully selected and randomly assigned to the experimental group (20) and control group (20). The pre-test was administered using the Keyes Social Well-Being Questionnaire (1998) and the Polotzine and Ellison Spiritual Health Questionnaire (1982). Subsequently, the experimental group underwent 8 weekly 90-minute sessions of self-care protocol; while the control group did not receive any treatment, and finally, the post-test was administered. Finally, both groups were assessed at one-month and two-month follow-ups.
Results: The results of analysis of variance with repeated measures and the Bonferroni test showed that the self-care protocol based on psychosocial-spiritual health specific to military personnel with prostate cancer has an effect on improving social and spiritual health in these patients, and this effect is stable over time (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Based on the results, the self-care protocol based on psychosocial-spiritual health has an effect on increasing the social and spiritual health of military personnel with prostate cancer, which is consistent with previous studies on the effect of self-care protocols on this group. Therefore, this protocol can be considered a complementary psychological method to improve the health of military personnel with prostate cancer. |
