Structural Analysis of the Relationship between Attitudes Towards Marriage and Attitudes Towards Dowry with the Mediation of Spiritual Attitude

Background and Aim: Despite the Islamic emphasis on facilitating marriage, the rising trend of dowry (mahr) in Iran has been associated with shifting marital attitudes; however, the role of spiritual attitude in this relationship has remained underexplored. The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of spiritual attitude in the relationship between attitudes toward marriage and attitudes toward dowry among single individuals.
Methods: This research employed a descriptive-correlational design. The statistical population comprised all single male and female individuals in Ardabil city, from which 371 participants were selected through purposive sampling. Participants completed the researcher-made Attitude toward Dowry Questionnaire, the Bratton and Rosen (1998) Attitude toward Marriage Scale, and the Shahidi and Farajnia (2012) Spiritual Attitude Questionnaire. The obtained data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via SPSS-26 and Amos-22.
Results: The findings indicated that the proposed structural model demonstrated a good fit with the data. Pessimistic, optimistic, and realistic attitudes toward marriage were directly and indirectly (through spiritual attitude) aligned with the components of dowry attitude. In contrast, idealistic attitudes exhibited less congruence with traditional and spiritual values, likely attributable to romantic expectations and the influence of modernity. Furthermore, attitudes toward marriage and spiritual attitude together accounted for 15.2% of the variance in financial security, 17.3% of the variance in customary-familial value, and 10% of the variance in religious-ethical commitment.
Conclusion: Spiritual attitude serves as a significant mediating factor in the linkage between pessimistic, optimistic, realistic, and idealistic attitudes toward marriage and the multifaceted components of dowry attitude (i.e., financial security, customary-familial value, and religious-ethical commitment). Accordingly, it is recommended that family policymakers integrate the promotion of spiritual health alongside the revision of dowry regulations into cultural and educational programs. |
