Abstract: (24 Views) |
Background and Aim: Lower limb amputation, especially in patients with diabetes and vascular diseases, has significant physical, psychological, and social consequences. Chronic pain, body image disturbance, depression, and reduced quality of life are common challenges for these patients. Given the role of spiritual health and religious beliefs in promoting psychological resilience, this study aimed to investigate the effect of spiritual remembrance and religious beliefs on reducing pain and improving the psychological state of amputees.
Methods: This article is a narrative review of qualitative and quantitative studies examining the impact of spirituality on patients with amputations. A search of related keywords was conducted through national and international databases, including SID, Magiran, IranDoc, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, up to the end of 2024. All studies related to the research topic were screened in two stages, and after the final selection, data were extracted.
Results: The articles related to the research topic included studies with phenomenological methodologies, cross-sectional studies, and empirical investigations that examined the relationship between spirituality, religious faith, prayer, and spiritual remembrance with the quality of life, chronic pain, and mental health of patients with amputations. The results of these studies suggest that spiritual remembrance, prayer, religious faith, and existential spirituality play a significant role in reducing pain, increasing hope, enhancing self-esteem, improving body image, and facilitating psychological adjustment in patients. Patients with stronger religious beliefs have shown greater resilience against the consequences of amputation. Additionally, spiritual care as part of the rehabilitation process can help patients integrate better into society.
Conclusion: Spiritual and religious beliefs can play an important role as complementary strategies alongside medical and rehabilitation treatments in improving the psychological state and reducing pain in patients with amputations. Integrating spiritual care with medical services provides a more comprehensive and humane approach to the management of these patients. Accordingly, it is recommended that health professionals receive the necessary training in the field of spiritual assessment and intervention, and include this component in the treatment and rehabilitation programs of patients. |
